The art of sculpture, where you can take a solid medium and contour it into a representation of an object or an abstract silhouette, is a difficult process. As we know of the masters, Michelangelo and Donatello, their dedication to this medium produced works that have impacted countless lives. From contemporary sculptures paying tribute to the fallen, to signs hanging from a pub entrance, sculpture is ever present to this day. Most sculptures are created from materials that can stand the test of time, such as stone. However, other sculptures are created using a more vulnerable, porous material that won’t stand up to the ever present challenges of mother nature – wood. Wood is widely considered to be the first material used to create a sculpture. From the first tool to the first sign, wood has been a malleable medium for the production of goods. Today hand-carving is an artisan’s trade, due to the fact that most manufacturing is done by automated machines.
At Carousel we continue the legacy of hand-carving and sculpting to produce custom signs, but we do it a little differently. As mentioned, before wood is susceptible to warping from the outdoor elements. We now use a different kind of material called HDU (High Density Urethane) or sign foam. This has become the industry standard for sign making. It is just as malleable as wood but can withstand the outdoors for decades.
We’re fortunate to have talented craftsmen and women at Carousel who practice this art. They’re able to create custom signage for you that can truly make you stand out in a crowd. There is no limit to the sorts of things they can carve.
Check out some of the signs we have done that have hand carved elements.
